The Fitness Coordinator, at the University of Delaware is a valued member within the University and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services (DIARS), upholding and embracing the departmental mission of “Inspiring Greatness Together.”

The Fitness Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director, Fitness and is responsible for assisting in all aspects of delivering a comprehensive and diverse fitness program. The Coordinator’s main function will be to ensure the successful design, development, and implementation of the fitness program. Responsibilities include; management of the fitness instructor staff and fitness class schedule, oversight of the personal training program, evening and weekend management of the part-time student employees, developing fitness programs, assisting with budget recommendations and financial/usage analysis, and assist with management and supervision of the CSB fitness center, Independence Fitness Center, Harrington Fitness Center and student staff during operating hours.

The incumbent will be a collaborative team player who possesses strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Major Responsibilities:

Staff Management and Development (50%)

  • Oversee and supervise fitness instructor staff. Focus on training, shadowing, providing continuing education, and evaluation of individual instructors.
  • Oversee and supervise personal trainers. Focus on training, shadowing, providing continuing education, and evaluation of individual trainers.
  • Schedule fitness certifications with Les Mills, AFAA, NETA, Cycling Fusion, and other NCCA accredited agencies.
  • Assist with hiring and serve as a secondary supervisor for student fitness supervisor staff and miscellaneous wage employees as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with the Fitness Director to maintain appropriate staffing levels in order to meet the demands of the fitness class schedule and personal training client volume.
  • Perform personal training, as necessary.
  • Instruct group fitness classes, as necessary.

Program Administration (35%)

  • Coordinate the administration and organization of a fitness program in support of university students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Identify fitness facility/program deficiencies and develop action steps to address outstanding issues with supervisor.
  • Oversee development and execution of fitness program procedures and protocols that are framed around creating maximum participation opportunities, promoting diversity and inclusion, and excellence in programming.
  • Resolve related concerns of recreation facility users and employ sound judgement to address issues and incidences.
  • Conduct data and usage analysis of national trends in the area of collegiate fitness programs, produce reports, make necessary recommendations to the Director of Fitness.
  • Manage and schedule personal training sessions.
  • Work with the Fitness Director in the development of the fitness budget each fiscal year, which includes group fitness classes, personal training, instructional recreation courses, and fitness programs.

Facilities and Equipment (10%)

  • Oversee and maintain group fitness studios, sound systems, storage spaces and fitness class equipment.
  • Assist with fitness center equipment maintenance and ensure repairs are completed in a timely manner.
  • Assist in oversight of satellite fitness centers.
  • Make suggestions for equipment replacement plan.

National Industry Involvement (5%)

  • Research national trends within collegiate and commercial fitness programs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues at other institutions to successfully develop new offerings to the UD fitness program.
  • Maintain professional affiliations, certifications, and enhance professional growth and development to remain abreast of latest trends in fitness, health, and wellness. 



  • High school diploma or GED and three to five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education of experience. Bachelor’s degree in a health, fitness, physical education, or other related field preferred. 
  • Experience in Personal Training and Group Fitness.
  • Experience evaluating fitness instructors and personal trainers in ability and skill level.
  • Experience teaching a variety of fitness class formats preferred.
  • Experience in exercise design, personal training and working with diverse clientele preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. 
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Self-starter and independent worker desired.

Special Requirements:

  • The position requires some evening and weekend work.
  • Ability to travel to fitness events, conferences and/or certifications, and NIRSA conferences when needed.
