ACSM Health Fitness Certifications
Give others the guidance and strength to lead a healthy lifestyle. With any of ACSM's three health fitness certifications you will make an impact on the lives of others with an advanced understanding of these topics.
Certified Personal Trainer®
The ACSM Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) is qualified to plan and implement exercise programs for healthy individuals or those who have medical clearance to exercise. The CPT facilitates motivation and adherence as well as develops and administers programs designed to enhance muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and/or any of the motor skill related components of physical fitness - i.e., balance, coordination and reaction time, to name a few.
Certified Group Exercise InstructorSM
ACSM Certified Group Exercise Instructors (GEI) are familiar and flexible with various exercise techniques, and can supervise participants or lead instructional sessions. The GEI works in a group exercise setting with apparently healthy individuals and those with health challenges who are able to exercise independently to improve health-related physical fitness, manage health risk, and promote lasting health behavior change.
Certified Exercise Physiologist
ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologists (EP-C) take personal training to an advanced level by working with individuals with medically controlled diseases. The EP-C masters the necessary skills to perform pre-exercise health risk assessments and conduct physical fitness assessments, among other health tasks, to support clients in adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors.
ACSM Clinical Certifications
Make a commitment to supporting heart health by serving those coping with cardiovascular, orthopedic, pulmonary and metabolic diseases or disabilities. Practitioners enjoy careers in cardiovascular or pulmonary rehabilitation programs, physicians' offices, medical fitness centers and other public health settings.
Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist
The ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) works with patients and clients challenged with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic diseases and disorders, as well as with apparently healthy populations in cooperation with other healthcare professionals. The goal of the CEP is to enhance quality of life, manage health risk, and promote lasting health behavior change. The CEP educates clients about testing, exercise program components, and self-care for the control of chronic disease and health conditions.
Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist®
The ACSM Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP) is an allied health professional that applies physical activity and behavioral interventions that have been shown to provide therapeutic and/or functional benefit for those with chronic diseases or disabilities. The RCEP provides prevention and rehabilitative strategies designed to improve physical fitness and health across the lifespan. The practice and supervision of the RCEP is guided by published professional guidelines, standards, and applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
ACSM Specialty Certifications
ACSM Specialty Certifications credential those who already have a NCAA accredited certification to work with special needs clients. Specialty certification ranges from the ability to work with clients of different fitness levels, to work with individuals affected by cancer and those with disabilities, and to promote physical activity in public health at national, state and local levels.
ACSM Exercise is Medicine Credential®
The ACSM Exercise is Medicine Credential (EIM) provides exercise professionals with the opportunity to work closely with the medical community. EIM provides additional benefits to the certified professional, including a respected credential to work with individuals who are healthy, those with health-related conditions who have been cleared by a physician for exercise (level 1 or 2), and for patients who require clinical support and monitoring (level 3).
ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise TrainerSM
ACSM has collaborated with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to develop a specialty certification allowing fitness professionals to work with clients who have been cleared by their physician for independent exercise and physical activity. Pursue the ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer (CET) credential and use your knowledge to develop exercise programs for clients making lifestyle changes caused by cancer and related treatments.
ACSM/NCHPAD Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer
In collaboration with the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD), ACSM has developed a specialty certification for fitness professionals to empower those who are challenged by physical, sensory or cognitive disabilities. ACSM/NCHPAD Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainers (CIFT) give clients the knowledge and support to lead a healthy and comfortable lifestyle.
ACSM/NPAS Certified Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist
ACSM, in collaboration with the National Physical Activity Society (NPAS), has developed a certification for professionals who want to promote physical activity with focus on the public health setting. The ACSM/NPAS Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist (PAPHS) develops key partnerships to establish legislation, policies and programs that promote physical activity for people all over the country.
