Valley Medical Center offers internships in Cardiac Rehab for winter, spring, summer and fall quarters. This program is located within the hospital's community Fitness Center and offers Phase II and III Cardiac Rehab services.
Approximately 25 to 45 patients are seen daily, and it is one of the busiest Cardiac Rehab units in the Seattle area. The exercise area reserved for the Cardiac Rehab patients offers a variety of cardiovascular and light strength training equipment.
The Cardiac Rehab intern is responsible for working with the staff of three nurses and one exercise specialist to monitor exercise training, educate the patients on risk factor modification, and document findings. The intern receives special training in cardiac monitoring, exercise prescription development for special populations, clinical skill development (BP, basic arrhythmia identification and RPE), assisting with exercise sessions, patient education, and documentation. There are opportunities to present classes to patients and to do case studies with several types of patients.
In addition to the hands-on experience gained in the Cardiac Rehab program, interns may also have the opportunity to work in the Fitness Center with other therapeutic programs such as arthritis, prenatal, adult fitness and senior groups.
1. Willing to commit to a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks.
2. Must be close to completion of a bachelor's degree in the area of excise science.
3. Have current CPR card.
4. Physically able to demonstrate the exercise equipment.
5. Positive role model for cardiovascular health
6. Self directed, hard working and willing to learn.
7. Great communication and customer service skills
8. Able to receive constructive criticism and react in a positive manner.
