Program Description

Here’s what you can look forward to as a graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College’s exercise science program:

“Graduates of Exercise Science programs are trained to assess, design, and implement individual and group exercise and fitness programs for individuals who are apparently healthy and those with controlled disease.

They are skilled in evaluating health behaviors and risk factors, conducting fitness assessments, writing appropriate exercise prescriptions, and motivating individuals to modify negative health habits and maintain positive lifestyle behaviors for health promotion.

The Exercise Science professional has demonstrated competence as a leader of health and fitness programs in the university, corporate, commercial or community settings in which their clients participate in health promotion and fitness-related activities.” (CAAHEP, 2011)

Requirements

Kentucky Wesleyan offers a bachelor of science degree in Exercise Science with two track options: Exercise Science and Health & Fitness Leadership.

Exercise Science: The curriculum is designed to prepare the student for the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) certification. Candidates are required to have at least an Associate’s Degree and are qualified to work with special populations with medically controlled diseases, who have been cleared by their physician for independent exercise. Advanced exercise physiology, special populations training, and laboratory experiences will be included. This track will target students aspiring to attend graduate school and pre-professional programs.

Health and Fitness Leadership: The curriculum is designed to prepare the student for the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer certification. Candidates are qualified to develop and implement exercise programs for apparently healthy individuals or those who have medical clearance to exercise. This track is less clinical and therefore does not require courses in advanced exercise physiology or special populations. Although certified to pursue a career in personal training, students are not limited to this profession.
